About

Norvell Tanning is a professional sunless-tanning brand serving spray tan artists, beauty professionals, and at-home customers through equipment, solutions, education, and certification. Following the launch of a new eCommerce site in late 2024, Norvell partnered with OuterBox to restore its commercial search presence and build a broader, more resilient organic growth engine. This engagement ran from January 2025–March 2026.

Challenge

The Norvell domain retained authority from the company’s previous site, but the relaunch effectively reset commercial rankings and organic revenue to near zero. Third-party retailers were outranking Norvell for its own branded terms and intercepting purchase-ready demand.

The team also faced a narrow seasonal window. Professional spray tan demand rises sharply in early spring, falls through summer, and recovers in Q4. Foundational work had to move quickly enough to capture the first buying peak, while the broader strategy needed to keep building value when commercial demand cooled.

The problem extended beyond individual rankings. Retailers owned the brand conversation, competitors owned category queries, and no clear leader owned the educational questions that aspiring professionals were asking. Plus, a search landscape changed by AI made rankings less of a sure thing for moving traffic. Norvell needed to rebuild visibility across the full customer journey, including LLM’s and AIO’s, and prove that it was gaining meaningful ground—not simply adding more ranking keywords.

Solution

OuterBox sequenced the program around the market’s seasonal rhythm. Each phase strengthened a different layer of authority: the brand, the category, the educational conversation and, finally, the conversion path.

Phase 1: Reclaim the Brand

Technical remediation, schema implementation, and more than 25 on-page optimizations reestablished relevance for Norvell’s own branded searches. Front-loading this work gave search engines clearer signals about the site’s entities, products, and page hierarchy before the spring buying season.

Phase 2: Own the Category

A competitor gap analysis and enterprise SEO audit revealed high-intent queries and technical barriers holding Norvell back. OuterBox overhauled core collection pages and launched new collections to capture previously unaddressed demand. AccuRanker’s daily ranking data and Competitor Statistics view showed where third-party retailers were holding positions on Norvell’s branded terms, so the team could focus on the terms where Norvell stood to gain the most.

Phase 3: Build the Audience Competitors Ignored

During the seasonal downturn, the strategy shifted upstream. Pillar content targeted business-owner and career intent; ten local class pages supported in-person training markets; a Meet Our Team page strengthened experience and expertise signals; and Course schema made certification content easier for machines to interpret.

This work was designed to do more than generate blog traffic. It created clear, connected source material around the questions people ask before they choose a product or training provider. That is the kind of well-structured, authoritative content that search engines and AI systems can retrieve, understand, and cite.

AccuRanker’s Historical AI Overview tracking showed that investment was paying off. Spray tan certification and Norvell University pages began appearing in Google AI Overviews during the slower summer months, which confirmed the content was being picked up beyond traditional rankings.

Phase 4: Convert

Bottom-of-page content, Black Friday optimization, and a Norvell Solutions Comparison Guide built a summer that was the highest-converting quarter in the site’s history. The comparison guide closed a critical messaging gap by helping Norvell explain how its products differ at the decision stage.

From January 2025 to March 2026, organic revenue increased 108%, with monthly organic orders rising from 61 to 202. Their conversion rate climbed from 1.05% to 2.16%, with a conversion rate peak of 2.48%.

The strongest year-over-year revenue gains came as the content and conversion work compounded:

  • +525% in October
  • +324% in November
  • +494% in December

Search visibility expanded in parallel, with monthly clicks increasing from 5,133 to 15,259 and impressions growing from 164,124 to 574,828.

How AccuRanker Turned Rankings Into Strategic Direction

AccuRanker data flowed into OuterBox reporting alongside data from Google Search Console, GA4, and Shopify, connecting visibility gains to clicks, customer behavior, orders, and revenue. It served as the visibility measurement layer throughout the engagement. Rather than treating rankings as a monthly scorecard, OuterBox used AccuRanker to decide where Norvell could gain ground fastest and whether those gains were strengthening its position across the category.

  • Daily keyword tracking verified that technical and on-page changes were restoring branded and category positions before seasonal demand peaked.
  • The Competitor Statistics view showed where competitors held positions, especially third-party retailers that had moved in on Norvell’s branded terms. That visibility guided where the team focused its effort.
  • Share of Voice tracked whether Norvell was taking real ground in the category or only moving around on individual keywords. For terms like “airbrush tanning solution” and “spray tan machine”, it showed whether Norvell was winning the click share.
  • Historical AI Overview tracking showed certification and Norvell University content appearing in AI Overviews, evidence that the summer content push was reaching beyond traditional rankings.
  • Keyword-level movement identified the terms producing the greatest gains, including four high-volume equipment and solution queries that reached an average position between 1.19 and 1.36.
  • The Competitors Rank 1-3 chart told the clearest story. By the end of the engagement, Norvell held roughly 100 keywords in the top three positions, compared with about 40 for the next closest competitor.

That integrated view changed the role of reporting. Layered alongside Shopify revenue data, the Rank 1-3 chart connected the ranking work to something Norvell could see and feel: top-three positions and organic revenue climbing together, proof that the channel was compounding and not only looking good in a rankings report. It also gave the team a faster feedback loop for prioritization.

AccuRanker Visibility Wins

Keyword improvements and positions gained:

  • Airbrush tanning solution: +35 (now 1.19)
  • Airbrush tanning system: +24 (now 1.19)
  • Airbrush tanning machine: +16 (now 1.26)
  • At-home spray tan machine: +33 (now 1.36)

By March 2026, Norvell held roughly 100 top-three positions across the tracked competitive set, more than twice the approximately 40 held by the next closest competitor. Top-10 keyword count grew from 358 in January 2025 to a peak of 565, a 58% increase.

Content that expanded authority:

  • Colorology page sessions: +976% year over year
  • Online Classes page sessions: +316% year over year; 7.76% CTR in March 2026
  • Bundles collection sessions: +1,700% year over year
  • Norvell University sessions: +602% year over year

Building Authority for the Next Era of Search

Norvell’s growth came from becoming easier to understand at every layer of their website: technically, commercially, and educationally.

  • Structured data clarified products and courses.
  • Purpose-built collection and comparison pages answered decision-stage needs.
  • Expert and local content expanded the brand’s topical footprint.
  • Internal pathways connected those resources to conversion-ready experiences.

Most results in this case study are traditional organic-search outcomes, but AccuRanker’s AI Overview tracking shows the same work already surfacing in AI-generated results. As discovery shifts further in that direction, brands need clear entity signals, structured information, topical depth, and credible source content to compete for both rankings and recommendations. AccuRanker gave OuterBox the evidence to measure Norvell’s growing authority in search while establishing a reporting framework that can expand as new visibility metrics become available.

The Business Impact: Norvell Owns More of the Customer Journey

Norvell now ranks at the top for its own branded terms, reducing the opportunity for third-party retailers to intercept high-intent customers. Its organic revenue base also extends beyond a single spring peak into equipment, solutions, training, and bundles.

The clearest sign of compounding value is customer loyalty. Returning-customer orders grew 925% year over year. Organic search did not merely create first purchases; it brought customers into a brand-owned experience they chose to revisit.

By pairing fast technical recovery with category expansion, authority content, and integrated AccuRanker reporting, OuterBox and Norvell turned a post-relaunch reset into a durable search advantage, positioned to compete for rankings, clicks, and recommendations.
