2026 Digital Marketing TrendsWhat's In & What's Out

The search results page stopped being a list of links and became a destination that answers the question itself. Our SEO and paid media teams walk through what that changes, and what to stop doing.
  • What is out and what is in across SEO and paid search, side by side
  • Why exact match no longer means exact, and what actually controls relevance now
  • How to earn a citation in an AI answer instead of competing for a click under it

What's Inside the Presentation

Presented by our enterprise SEO and paid media specialists, built from the accounts they run every day rather than from industry commentary.

The SERP's Purpose Changed

The results page went from a directory that sends traffic to a destination that answers the question. What that does to the value of a top ranking.

The Boundaries of SEO Expanded

Buyer journeys now start inside private conversations with AI tools. Where that leaves a strategy built entirely around Google.

From Page Authority to Entity Authority

Google validates the brand behind the page, not just the page. What it takes to be read as the definitive source in your category.

SEO Trends: Out and In

Three side-by-side breakdowns. Optimizing for clicks, the website-only content strategy, and the singular focus on keywords, each with what replaced it.

Paid Trends: Out and In

Exact match that is no longer exact, the end of Video Action campaigns, manual CPC, ads inside AI Overviews, and what AI Max actually is.

What We Think Happens Next

Predictions for where search goes from here, each with steps you can take before it arrives.

The Click Was the Prize. Now the Citation Is.

For twenty years the job was to earn the click. Rank first, win the visit, measure the traffic. That worked because the results page was a list of doors and ranking first meant being the nearest one.

The results page is not a list of doors anymore. It answers the question in place, and the answer is assembled from sources it trusts rather than handed to whoever ranked first. Being the nearest door matters less when fewer people walk through any door at all.

What replaces it is influence. Being the source the answer is built from, being the brand a buyer remembers afterwards, and earning the search that starts with your name instead of your category.

That is a different job than the one most programs are built for, and the presentation is specific about which parts of your current work still count toward it and which parts have quietly stopped.

"Our case studies are built on firsthand data - a trust signal that is verifiable, impossible to copy, and valued by AI."

Exact Match Is Not Exact Anymore

The clearest example of the shift is the one paid teams feel first. Exact match used to mean the words you typed, plus plurals and word order. It now means the intent behind them, so a campaign built on industrial air compressor can serve a search for compressed air solutions for a warehouse. Control did not disappear, it moved: relevance is now decided by your landing page content, your audience signals and your conversion data rather than by the words in the keyword field.
